Augustyn’s Spring Works Rally Bredasdorp

Home RALLYSTAR ARTICLES Motorsport News Rally News

Lucas Augustyn started his association with the Witzenberg Motorklub and regional rallying as sponsor of the Leon Esterhuyse / Marco Hamilton class S4 Opel Kadett GSi 2.0. His specialist concern is well known in the Western Cape and in 2005 Lucas stepped up his involvement by sponsoring the Bredasdorp round of the regional championship.

Andries van der Walt made the welcome announcement that Total SA will become the title sponsors of the 2006 regional rally championship with cash awards available to the true privateer entries on each event affected. Two regional events are run as part of national rallies in the Western Cape and these are excluded from this agreement.

JP Damseaux & Cobus Vrey - A7 winners
On Saturday 6 May 2006 round two of the Total WP Rally Championship will see competitors contest ten stages in the customary fast Overberg and as before it was Lance and Rosemarie Mayham that took care of the planning with Pierre van der Westhuizen completing the final check. Also encouraging is the fact that the association with Augustyn’s Spring Works are set to continue. Spectators are encouraged to view all the cars at stages 2, 4, 5 and 7 and then select between 9 and ten as their final vantage point.

Twenty teams entered the event at the time of writing with more late entries anticipated. Set to win the 2005 regional title Paul Pfeiffer saw this opportunity disappear when his car failed to make the start of the final Ceres rally and with Carl Peskin filling the suicide seat he looks set to make amends in 2006. The Arc-en-Ciel Gp N4 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI drops to third on the road with the entry of Enzo Kuun and Duncan English in their ex-Fekken class A7 VW Polo Playa 2.0 and the Jean-Pierre Damseaux / Cobus Vrey Team Total class A7 Toyota Corolla Rxi 2.0. Some doubt existed about these two entries but they will defenitely make life difficult for the 4x4 coming Saturday.

Jon and Doug Williams start in fourth place with their ex-Kuun SWMC class A7 BP / Trident Press VW Polo Playa 2.0 and the defending regional drivers champion will certainly push as hard as possible to keep the “works” teams in check. Shaun Jones and William Thorpe have finally received their upgraded gearbox and the elderly CPMCC class S5 VW Golf Synchro 4x4 might just have the legs to live with the modern machinery. John Peiser and Brian Hoskins enjoyed a morale building result during the recent Toyota Dealer Rally and the Speed Pro Cycling Components CPMCC Gp N4 Subaru Impreza Turbo 4x4 look set to maintain these standards for the year. Seventh off the line will be Andy Haigh-Smith and Dirk Malan in their ex-Barboza CPMCC Gp N2 Team REACT Mitsubishi Lancer 1600 and though it might be as quick as the A6 Corolla, it should prove pretty consistent.

Kobus Edas and Derek Jacobs have the potential to surprise in their ex-Pfeiffer CCMCC class A6 Toyota Corolla RXi 1600. They work well as a team and the car is certainly very quick. Kobus have been building confidence and with the experienced Jacobs as navigator they could threaten at the front of the field. Peter Heyer-Cleave and Brendon Schultz return in their ex-Safari CPMCC class S5 Mitsubishi Evo III Turbo 4x4 and they too have been gradually improving.

Eugene Marais and Paul van Greunen run their regular WBMK class S3 Fetch & Carry VW Golf GTi 1800 and have hopefully found a little more reliable power. Very consistent this team need more power to live up to expectations. Leon Esterhuyse and new navigator, Wiebe van Wyk, will be hoping for a good result in their WBMK class S4 Augustyn’s Spring Works Opel Kadett GSi 2.0 as this could effectively be considered their home event and the Opel certainly enjoys the faster environment. Thorsten Pey and Mark Palmer enjoyed an encouraging debut on the recent Toyota Dealer rally and the team will provide the rear wheel drive action in their WBMK class S4 BMW 325i. Currently in the process of building confidence and sorting a new car, they could well surprise in the final results. The former Western Province Clubmans racing champion enjoys the high speed stages.

Thenswille Overmeyer and Wesley van Heerden will debut the ex-Abduraghman Amlay CCMCC Toyota Corolla RXi 1600 in Gp N2 guise and given reliability they can provide a fair turn of speed to complete the package. Andre George and Hilton Auffray share the ultra
reliable CPMCC class S2 VW Golf 1600 and if consistency alone was enough they would win the championship. Rupert van Zyl and Marius Rudolph return in their CPMCC class S3 VW Golf GTi 1800 and will be followed off the start line by the CCMCC class S3 Fix-a-Smash Toyota Conquest RSi 1600 of Kesevan Naidoo and Garth Scholtz. Nishaad Murudker and Adrienne Swart next in their CCMCC class S3 Murway Motors Toyota Conquest RSi 1700.

Harry Giliomee and Fritz Blom have been working hard to get their WBMK class S2 Toyota Corolla 1600 reliable and the team deserves a good result for their efforts. Engen Polo Cup and Gp N racer, Shane Williams, will have younger brother, Rob, navigating on his rallying debut behind the controls of a SWMC class A5 Trident Press VW Golf Citi. No slouch on track it might be a good thing father Douglas is navigating higher up in the field as his nerves might not last having all three sons rallying! Final team away at this stage would be the 1976 WBMK Datsun 1600 SSS of Gavin Grierson and David Delaney. Having won the coveted Chris Truter Trophy as the top rear wheel drive team in 2000 they have decided to return to rallying as their Datsun is now 30 years old!

Five stages will be repeated twice and as usual spectators are encouraged to view the action at the popular oval track near Bredasdorp. The oval will be run as stage five and ten and should you prefer, they will be having a proper race meeting at the track. Spectator guides will be available at the start on Saturday morning and for additional information feel free to call the CoC, Pierre van der Westhuizen, at 082 316 3445.

Unfortunately Jean du Plessis have as yet not taken delivery of the ex-Jacques Brits class S3 Toyota Conquest Rsi 1600 but is itching to get back into action whilst Inus du Plessis is still enjoying his honeymoon, thus the red BMW 325i will not be present either. Thorsten Pey arranged the wedding car and even drove it himself – obviously making sure the opposition does not turn up this weekend!
