19th Hyperformance Club Mykonos Gymkhana

Home RALLYSTAR ARTICLES Motorsport News Club Mykonos Gymkhana Series

On Saturday 4 November 2006 the King of Mykonos will be crowned and the winner of the Casino Challenge will be announced. The difficult part is to predict who would be doing the receiving! Mike Nathan must start the day as the firm favourite as he already has six titles behind his name and the Dals Autobody Mazda Rustler enjoys cultist support at Mykonos.

Dawie Joubert - Lotus Elise2
Having just successfully defended his Gp N2 Sasol SA rally driver’s championship Mike will also have his championship winning AWI Toyota Corolla RXi present on the day. He will be joined by the WP Gp N2 title leading McCarthy N1 City Toyota Corolla RXi of young Ettiene du Toit, as they will be going head to head on the day. Car Torque will be present and Stuart Johnston will navigate for Mike whilst the SA voice of F1, Hendrik Verwoerd, will be filling the suicide seat next to Ettiene. That is if they survive their introduction to Bugaloo on the Friday!

Dawie and Allison Joubert have shown great potential in their superb class G Lotus Elise Motorsport and with a new touring car specification BMW engine fitted the black car will not be taking any prisoners on the day. It’s all or nothing and second place is simply not good enough amongst the top teams. André Dreyer have been knocking on the door for some time and could well finish his year on top with the Weskaap Bakwerke class A VW Golf GTi 2.0 16v whilst Duncan Jepthas have similar plans for his final outing in the CSS supercharged 1660 class G VW Golf Citi. Former champion, Cobus Erasmus, will return in command of the BoschTech class G supercharged VW Fox 1.9 and another former champion is said to return on the day.

The action in the individual classes will be of equally entertaining quality and one would have to follow Neels Rabe, Pieter Swanepoel and Hendrik Verwoerd closely to appreciate every run. Class A will see the superiority of West Coast based André Dreyer threatened by the likes of Brent Laurings (Opel Kadett), Ian Herbst (VW Golf GTi) and Michael Brown. Some serious Rustling will be required to beat Mike Nathan in class B but would it not be something to tell the grandchildren about should somebody succeed! Expect the Denyssen family to give their all in the Uniref Opel Kadett GSi 1800 and a multitude of Golf challengers are slowly but surely catching up. Class C has the Black Ice Conquest RSi of Eugene Bower reigning supreme at this stage but the Honda Civic of Shaun Fairbairn is returning and the Speedy Conquest of young Albertus Loubser is getting quicker with each event. Also never forget about Geoffrey Wellstead and Michael Brown.
Mike Nathan

Class D will have Gary Segers (VW Golf 1.4i) and Attie Groenewald (Opel Kadett 140) at war and they better be well aware of the Okavango Car Wash Golf of Jean-dré Pepper to name but one of the bright prospects in this class. Danie Smuts intends adding another class E title to his name in the Acquality BMW 325i but he will have to keep the similar machines of a very determined Pieter Hugo, Johann Zulch and Roy Laing at bay and then Gavin Grierson have entered the ex-Supertrucks Nissan Skyline 2.8GTX just to add further spice. Class F will see the quick Nissan LDV’s face the odd 320 BMW and smaller capacity rear wheel drive entries. Steph Petersen a very popular figure in this class with Anton Smit becoming a serious threat.

Class G should prove very exciting with Dawie Joubert in his Lotus Elise Motorsport facing stiff challenges from the supercharged cars of Duncan Jepthas (CSS Golf) and Cobus Erasmus (BoschTech Fox). Hopefully the very rapid supercharged Lotus 7 of Jan Nel will also be ready for action. Then there is the constant promise of new machinery joining the regulars – time will tell.

Class H have suddenly come alive with a number of entries in Formula M vehicles and the sole 5.6 V8 Rover SDX of Edwin Hambly. The little racers quite capable of setting the quickest time overall for the day whilst the monster Rover provides smoking entertainment. Class I will see Linda Binedell (Audi TT) face regular sparring partner Nashrene Schloss (Toyota Sprinter) and their tussle was one of the event highlights in July. Expect much more this time.

Then of course there is the purely entertaining side of the event where teams have little respect for stopwatch times – they prefer the support of the crowd in attendance and in a certain way the likes of Werner Koekemoer, Gary and Hermann Mahnke as well as Mynhardt de Jongh have become even more popular than the actual champions. Never an easy decision but someone will be crowned as the Radio Tygerberg 104Fm Most Spectacular Driver of the Day.

Be there!
