Round 5 of the Western Province Rally Championship could well prove a turning point for regional rallying as this will be the most compact and accessible all tar event ever. Totalling 95.99km in distance the seven specials stages actually total 95.99km! A complete event with barely three kilometers of open section, two night stages on Saturday (17h00 to 22h00) and five entertaining stages on Sunday (09h00 to 15h00).

The good news is that many “wannebe” rallyists from other categories of motorsport, such as the popular Indy Oils Clubman Cars and GTi Challenge will now be able to test their skills, running as separate classes in the same event as the regular rallyists. Obviously it will not be fair to match these cars under the same umbrella as the unlimited modifications and lightweight racers will undoubtedly prove very competitive, but could find navigation a new challenge.

Running for championship points the rallyists will favour consistency and a good overall result rather than taking on personal pride, but the greatest beneficiaries of such a venture will be the avid motorsport spectator who will be able to watch all the action for just R30 entrance or R20 should he prefer to attend only the Sunday stages.

The number draw for this event takes place at the WPMC Main Clubhouse at Killarney on Wednesday 9 July 2008 with a maximum entry of 60 cars. Now should this be achieved it would reset many attitudes! Documentation and Scrutineering will take place at the Scrutiny Bay at Killarney from 14h00 on Saturday 19 July with the first of two stages starting at 17h00. Sunday will see the first car off at 09h00 and finish at 15h00. Prizegiving will also take place in the WPMC Main Clubhouse.

Run under the banner of the Witzenberg Motorklub it must however be mentioned that almost everyone active in the sport have pitched in to make this a success. Clerk of the Course will be Robert Marle (CPMCC), Paul Simon (WPMC) is the appointed Club Steward, Joyce Dolinschek is the apponted MSA Steward whilst Assitent Clerk of the Course will be Pierre van der Westhuizen (WBMK). Dave Smeda and Hugh Young will as always look after the Radio Marshalling and Arrowing will be done by Theo Croy and his capable team. Johann Zulch (WBMK) will be driving the Ceres Toyota 0 car.

Cannot wait to see some of the Clubman or GTi Challenge cars tackle a night stage with spotlights and navigators. Spectator support will make this event something special as night rallying has a unique atmosphere unrivalled by any other category of motorsport and once the mood has been set the day stages simply add character.

Entry lists and spectator guides will be available at the circuit entrance gates.
