The 2010 VW Rally being held in Port Elizabeth, started dramatically this morning when one of the favourites for the event, Hergen Fekken and his co-driver, Pierre Arries, in the Class S2000 BP VW Polo crashed out of the rally on the first stage. As yet it is not clear what caused the accident.

On the second stage the Class A7 VW Polo of Gavin Cronje/Van Aardt Schoeman caught fire and was severely damaged. Japie van Niekerk/Robin Houghton in a Toyota Auris are also out of the rally, but no information on what caused them to exit the event is available.

Conrad Rautenbach/ Peter Marsh in a Class S2000 Ford Fiesta is leading the rally with a time of 25min 55 seconds in spiote of going of the road and through a fence on the first stage. Second is the S2000 Castrol Toyota Auris of Johnny Gemmell/Drew Sturrock 0n 25 min 57.2 seconds. Third overall is Hein Lategan/Johan van der Merwe in another S2000 Toyota RunX on 26 min 02.5 seconds.


In fourth position is Jannie Habig/Ralph Pitchford in a S2000 BP Vw Polo with a time of 26 min 04.6 seconds followed by another BP VW Polo team, Enzo Kuun/Guy Hodgson on 26 min 08.3 seconds.

Altogether 32 national rally competitors started the event in Uitenhage this morning.
