Reaching the age of 21 is considered the most important birthday in the life of most humans, while the coming of age of the Witzenberg Motorklub might not have passed with a fanfare and headlines but it certainly filled the members with pride as few gave the small group of enthusiasts from Ceres any chance of surviving this long.
The club not only survived, it can now proudly consider itself the second strongest rally club in the Western Cape, hosting two rounds of the WP Rally Championship as well as six of the best “rally” gymkhana’s in the country. Under the guidance of the Honorary President and longest serving chairman, Pierre van der Westhuizen, the club have gone from strength to strength.

Only two members have ever been awarded Honorary Life Membership and they are also the only two founder members still active in the club today, Pierre van der Westhuizen and Johann Zulch. The club dominated the Pop’s Robert Interclub Trophy for eleven consecutive years and the series was eventually discontinued as a result. On the rally front Johann Zulch/Patrick Vermaak won six WP class championships and Diffie Marais/Danie de Waal won the overall WP Rally Championship in their Gp N2 Toyota Corolla RSi 1600.

The club have their monthly meetings at The Manor in Malmesbury on the first Tuesday of each calender month and as such it was appropriate that the annual prizegiving be held at the same venue. The spit was prepared at 11am and Johan Verwey soon found himself surrounded by club members at the pool. Always held in a very informal fashion the 2004 function was once again very much a family get together with a short prizegiving in the late afternoon. Present as honorary guests was the Chairman of CPMCC (Senior GrandPa) Andy Haigh-Smith, President of CPMCC Bill Bright and the Rally Sub Chairman Tony Norton (and Mrs Norton!). First on the list of activities was the acknowledgement of every driver and navigator that contested events under the banner of the Witzenberg Motorklub during 2004 and these are categorized under the Basil Wesson Floating Trophy and Francois van der Merwe Floating Trophy. Normally run as two different categories the club members supported so many events consistently during 2004 that the results actually produced the same result in both. All participating members receiving a merit certificate for their contribution towards the success of the club.
