    From the Left Hand Seat

Forty percent into the calendar year shows our Challenge Standings bedding down with the propensity to unfold into a nail biting battle, both overall and within the categories. Typical of motor sport, there are close contests not only at the top but also at places within the line up

Some criticise CRRASA for being too competitive, but I believe our competitiveness is the corner stone of the sustainability of our sport. We often allude to our activities as the “grass roots level” of motor sport, however can one regard scores averaging less than one second per control over events between 200km and 1 200km as “grass roots level”? And now the added technicalities of complex route schedules with floaters, simultaneous equations and the necessity of precise odometers merely to keep on route would indicate we should change “grass roots level” to “affordable” for whilst within our ranks we have some extremely smart regularity rallyists, our game is without doubt the lowest cost form of motor sport

In such a competitive scenario we are fortunate to be constituted within the professional regulatory environment of MSA coupled with our own comprehensive and dynamic Supplementary Regulations and Minimum Standards. To sustain and grow our competitive sport we have to attract new blood and who better to provide the training than last year’s champions, who just happen to have National Colours for regularity rallying? Communication too is of paramount importance, both to our membership as well as to the media. CRRASA has evolved into a culture of obtaining sponsorship and controlling its finances in order to enhance the affordability of our sport. We create a calendar which attempts to avoid conflicts with other forms of motor sport and we set out to attract related forms of regularity rallying to our events, such as the Blind Navigators, Bikers and Sealed ODO competitors. We facilitate the issuing of MSA licences and strive to assist our organising clubs to stage professional, compliant events. We manage and control our marshals and equipment. All of these things are what you have entrusted to your committee and I am pleased to report that the enthusiasts on your committee are doing an exceptional job!

But no – competitiveness is not our only corner stone; we are predominantly Classic Car enthusiasts and thrive on the camaraderie within our events. I recently ran the Sakabula Rally in Pietermaritzburg with my wife driving her Spitfire MK2 – in her words “all these hills seem to be uphill” – we spent most of the day making up time, but what fun we had! Competitiveness is the motivating force to get us to the start line, however at the same time we must take the opportunity to enjoy our cars and appreciate the varied characters of our fellow competitors – and believe me we do not lack in that respect!
