The 15th Hyperformance Club Mykonos Resort & Casino Gymkhana organized by Witzenberg Motor Club will take place on the 13th of August 2005.

Early this morning when I opened my e-mail and read through the regulations for this event, it dawned on me what this whole exercise actually was.

Can you believe it that in this day and age when you open your e-mail you are offered at least 10 types of tablets that will increase not only sexual performance, but also guarantee that you will not look out of place running the July handicap naked, that you still get a motorsport event with a 100 entry cut off point.

Werner Koekemoer - supporting a tyre manufacturer
I made a few quick calculations to see what this actually meant to the businesses in the area involved and calculated that all in all the competitors will spend at least R1m in that area over the specific weekend. That of course is not taking into account the grocery money or motorboat payment that you will lose (inevitably) in the Casino!

It does also not take into consideration how much money the tyre, spare and fuel companies will be raking in, while once again we also supply unequalled free entertainment to the spectators.

This is the sort of publicity we should be chasing, this is what we should always make potential sponsors aware of.

Then on the other hand – this same organising club not so long ago made the “unforgivable” mistake to accidentally publish a time and distance schedule before the allowed time and they got a heavy fine from the controlling body! This while Witzenberg undoubtedly do more for motorsport in the area than most other clubs combined.
Anything you can do I can do ..... Mynhardt and Liezel in a drift!

So I suppose the real question is – if those who are supposed to promote and yes, also control the sport do not see the value of work done and instead of jumping down on the few who really try their utmost to get the sport going, at every opportunity they get, how can we expect sponsors to see the value?

And before anyone kak their best set of Wednesday morning pants and grab a phone in disgust to phone each other because I have to dare criticise, I am not saying that rules are not rules – all I am saying is look before you leap or you will manage to keep the sport where we will have to lift the carpet to find it.

To Pierre van der Westhuizen and especially Patrick Vermaak and their team I can only say: Viva! Viva your enthusiasm! While I Toi-Toi over the bodies of those who will rather handicap than build!

Oh, oh… no I don’t mean because the rules were “applied” – not that I will ever believe that they were correctly or fairly applied for that matter in this specific case – that those who did apply them are handicappers, no sir, that is not what I said. All I am saying is that we need people who will rather build together than sit on the side line ready to pounce on anyone who due to a bit of over enthusiasm dare touch the side line!
