Jean Pierre Damseaxu and Cobus Vrey - overall winners
|
Jean-Pierre Damseaux and Cobus Vrey faced some stern opposition but stuck to their guns, winning seven of the ten stages enroute to a popular victory in the Team Total A7 SWMC Toyota Corolla RXi 2.0 20v.
Enzo Kuun and Duncan English put in a spirited performance with their BP A7 CPMCC VW Polo Playa 2.0 20v to slot into second spot with the Arc-en-Ciel Gp N4 CPMCC Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6 Turbo 4x4 of Paul Pfeiffer and Carl Peskin finishing third.

Finally showing consistency was fourth placed John Peiser and Brian Hoskins in their Speed Pro Cycling Equipment Gp N4 CPMCC Subaru Impreza GT Turbo 4x4 and they were followed home by the ex-Safari S5 CPMCC Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 3 Turbo 4x4 of Peter Heyer-Cleave and Brendon Schultz.

First rear wheel drive home was the impressive S4 WBMK BMW 325i of Thorsten Pey and Mark Palmer. Their only mishap was rupturing a left front tire against a rock in the penultimate stage. Fortunately the only damage was a broken indicator and a few dings in the mudguard. When considering that they spend long periods travelling in excess of 195km/h one can only imagine what the top five were doing at times! Ever consistent, Andy Haigh-Smith and Dirk Malan, placed the Team REACT Gp N2 CPMCC Mitsubishi GLX 1600 seventh overall.

Eighth overall in their debut rally had young Shane and Rob Williams wearing big grins as their Trident Press A5 SWMC VW Golf 1.4i survived the day intact. Initial teething problems with the time cards and odometer were soon resolved and this is a team to watch in future. Leon Esterhuyse and Wiebe van Wyk finally enjoyed a good rally in the Augustyn’s Spring Works S4 WBMK Opel Kadett GSi 2.0 and ninth place on their “home” event simply had to do wonders for team morale.
André George and Hilton Auffray completed the top ten in the ever consistent S2 CCMCC VW Golf 1.6. Rupert van Zyl and Marius Rudolph earned their slice of the Total cake by placing their S3 CPMCC VW Golf GTi 1.8 eleventh after a calculated effort whilst Eugene Marais and Paul van Greunen could not have been happy with twelfth spot in their Fetch & Carry S3 WBMK VW Golf GTi 1.8. They lost some six minutes in stage 4 and could never recover this time.
Nishaad Murudker and Adrienne Swart thirteenth in the Murway Motors S3 CCMCC Toyota Conquest RSi 1700 with Harry Giliomee and Fritz Blom finally making it home in their S2 WBMK Toyota Corolla 1600 rwd. Recipients of the Rosemarie Maytham wooden sppons as final finishers were Gavin Grierson and David Delaney in their 30 year old S2 WBMK Datsun 160U SSS.
Thenswille Overmeyer and Wesley van Heerden became the first statistics of the event when their Gp N2 Toyota Corolla RXi 1600 slid off the road into a sloot on stage one and though the car was not damaged, it simply proved impossible to get it back on the road. Shaun Jones and William Thorpe completed stage one only to see the oil pressure drop to zero at the flying finish. No real damage done to the engine but with no oil remaining they called it a day in the S5 CPMCC VW Golf Synchro 4x4.
Jon and Douglas Williams lasted until stage two when they attacked a cattle grid with too much enthusiasm in the Trident Press / BP A7 VW Polo Playa 2.0, breaking a sideshaft courtesy of a rather hard landing. Kesevan Naidoo and Garth Scholtz retired their Fix-A-Smash S3 CCMCC Toyota Conquest RSi 1600 with a very sick engine after stage five.

Charl Strydom / Sakkie Bosman VW Golf
|
Having only completed the car in PE on Friday the presence of Charl Strydom and Sakkie Bosman was something of a bonus on Saturday and though the team was very complimentary of the much improved Sabre Paints A6 CPMCC VW Polo a noisy gearbox saw them call it a day after stage five. The only pre-start withdrawal was the A6 CCMCC Toyota Corolla RXi 1600 of Kobus Edas and Derek Jacobs.
Thanks to the much appreciated cash incentives offered to the regional competitors by Total most of the finishers actually returned home feeling like works teams, having earned good money for their efforts. Brian Roy enjoyed a trouble free debut as Clerk of the Course and even the weather assisted in making this a memorable event.
The Witzenberg Motorklub will also be responsible for round 3 of the Total WP Rally Championship, the very popular Op-die-Berg Ceres Rally which will take place on 24 June 2006.
See you there !

John Peiser / Brian Hoskins Subaru Impreza GT
|
