ACCIDENT HOLDS UP OSRAM RALLY

Three accidents on stage 2 of the Osram Rally being held in Barkley East, forced the organisers to suspend the rally for more than three hours to give the medical team an opportunity to attend to the more serious of the three. Jaco van Dyk and Des Fortier in a Class S2000 VW Polo was involved in the first accident and they were taken by helicopter to hospital to be treated. They did not suffer any serious injuries and taking them to hospital is just a precaution.

The other two accidents involved Gugu Zulu/Cindy Harding in a VW Polo in Class A7 and Rikus Fourie and Tjaart Conradie in an Toyota Auris. They were not hurt.

The first stage of the day was won by Enzo Kuun/Guy Hodgson in a Class S2000 BP VW Polo, The second stage by his team mate Hergen Fekken/Pierre Arries in a similar car and after the rally resumed stage three was won by Conrad Rautenbach/Peter Marsh in a Ford Focus.

After three stages Fekken was leading with a time of 41:03.5, followed by Kuun 1.7 seconds slower and the third BP VW Polo team of Jannie Habig/Douglas Judd third 16.9 seconds behind Kuun.

Johnny Gemmell/Drew Sturrock in a Castrol Toyoya Auris lost time in stage three and is currenly lying 9th 2:12.5 seconds behind the 8th placed Nicolas Ryan. At the start of the event Gemmell and Kuun were both leading the national championship log. His team mate Mark Cronje also suffered some problem and was lying even further back.

The rally started in Barkley East this morning and will end there again much later this afternoon.
